Mocktails Are Having Their Moment
The move towards moderation is much bigger than a passing social-media trend.
Current IWSR research shows that moderation has become firmly established across major international markets. In South Africa specifically, 58% of consumers surveyed in March 2025 said they had abstained from alcohol for a period during the previous six months. (IWSR)
More recent 2026 research reinforces the shift. People may still drink, but they are increasingly drinking less per occasion, and no-alcohol beverages are one of the areas continuing to grow. (IWSR)
Health and lifestyle are important drivers too. In IWSR research released in January 2026, 37% of consumers choosing no-alcohol beer and 40% choosing no-alcohol wine or spirits cited a healthy lifestyle as a reason. (IWSR)
The message is clear:
Not drinking alcohol doesn’t mean people don’t want a special drink.
Quite the opposite.
They still want the beautiful glass.
The garnish.
The layers of flavour.
The theatre.
The photograph.
And, most importantly, the experience.
